WELCOME
The Morris Area Genealogy Society (MAGS) provides a lively forum for resource sharing, mutual assistance, and instruction for those interested in family history and genealogy. Beginners as well as more experienced genealogists profit from monthly lectures on topics relating to genealogy. Since our origin in 1988 at the Joint Free Public Library of Morristown and Morris Township, our Society has grown and we now meet at the Morris County Library*, 30 East Hanover Ave., Whippany, NJ on the first Tuesday evening of the month. Visitors are welcome at our monthly meetings. Refreshments are served at 6:30; the program begins at 7:00. If a monthly meeting needs to be cancelled, every effort is made by the MAGS Board to notify the Morris County Library before 3 pm, with a cancellation notification posted on this page of this website. When in doubt, please call the Morris County Library directly. Among the benefits of membership are a subscription to the quarterly Morris Area Genealogy Society Newsletter and participation in our MAGS Special Interest Groups (SIGs). A MAGS SIG is a smaller group within the larger organization (MAGS) with a shared interest in a specific area; it focuses on particular challenges and topics such as research strategies in a smaller, less formal setting. SIGs can provide individual help on your genealogy research. Go to our Special Interest Group page for more information. The Morris County Library meeting rooms are now open again. However, due to technical difficulties at the library our meeting months the remainder of the MAGS fiscal year thru May 2024 - monthly general meetings will continue online via Zoom only. Members are encouraged to volunteer their time and share their expertise by serving on committees. *Directions to the Library. Telephone number: 973-285-6930. |

AI and Genealogy Tasks - by Ed Swierczewski
The newest tool is Artificial Intelligence (AI), and we need to understand its benefits and limitations. Ed will use cases to demonstrate some of the abilities of AI for common genealogical tasks like: Summarization, Extraction, and Translation. A handout will be distributed with prompts so that these skills can be put to immediate use.
Ed Swierczewski, a MAGS member, has been a professional educator for over 30 years, and a genealogist for almost 30 years. His genealogy education includes multiple courses from GRIP and SLIG, and he is a ProGen alum. He founded Integrative Genealogy LLC and serves as the Chief Genealogical Officer. He is an award-winning genealogical writer and a Laura G. Prescott SLIG Scholarship recipient and has presented genealogy webinars locally and nationally. He has presented at various genealogy venues both live and virtually, including in-person at RootsTech 2023 in Salt Lake City. He possesses a deep passion for sharing his knowledge with others, and a commitment to life-long learning. |
